We began as an informal group  who gathered to write postcards to get out the vote for the 2024 election, building new connections and friendships along the way.

After that election we realized that the democracy we all cherish was threatened.  

Understanding that the best ways to defend democracy are to strengthen our communities and inspire others to do the same, we decided to keep meeting, providing support for each other as we all contribute to our communities, together and through individual actions.

Our aim is to engage others in doing the work that is most suited to them individually and that is needed in this historical moment. 

While we have undertaken countless actions daily as individuals that are as diverse as our members, from calling our representatives to writing letters to the editor, tutoring children, and supplying food to those in need, as a group we have undertaken larger actions. 

We sponsored a town hall for our no-show Congressman where 1,000 people showed up to tell their stories of how government cuts were hurting them and those they love.  

We held a fundraiser to support our immigrant neighbors who are under increasing threat.

Our joyful and colorful community art project, Dreams for Democracy, is in progress.

We did not plan to create Gathering for Democracy. It arose organically to meet this moment in our nation’s history.
